I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist, CBT Practitioner and Life Coach. I have been helping the people of Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Limerick and Tipperary (and beyond), successfully overcome panic attacks for the past fifteen years.

From dealing with similar problems for years now, I fully understand how bad a panic attack can make you feel. It can be so frustrating when people tell you “it’s all in your head”. The problem is – they are right. It’s your unconscious mind that’s generating the panic. Your mind essentially is making a mistake. 

Your mind thinks that your surroundings are “dangerous” and that the appropriate action is to trigger off your “fight or flight” response. This, of course, is a mistake in most cases. Your surroundings at that moment are probably not dangerous at all.

Treatment for panic attacks involves re-training your unconscious mind (using hypnosis), to change how it assesses what is dangerous and what’s not. In other words, we don’t want to fully take away panic but instead, only have it trigger off when there is a genuinely life-threatening situation happening.

Here are some of the main symptoms of panic attacks. If it’s your first time having a panic attack and you experience pains in your chest, always err on the side of safety. Don’t just assume it’s a panic attack. Go to your doctor or to the emergency department to rule out any heart-related issue.

Nobody can say with absolute certainty what causes a panic attack. Experts speculate that it could be because of

  • a very stressful life experience (eg. work-related stress, breakup of a relationship, feeling overwhelmed, etc.)
  • being naturally more emotional (are you always known as the “softie”?)
  • being passed on to you genetically (does a close family member suffer with anxiety or panic attacks?)
  • a chemical imbalance in your brain (in the same way as depression is caused by a lack of serotonin)
