Emotional Abuse Definition

“Emotional abuse is a pattern of behavior in which the perpetrator insults, humiliates, and generally instills fear in an individual in order to control them. The individual’s reality may become distorted as they internalize the abuse as their own failings.”

These are by no means all of the signs of emotional abuse, but they are some of the more obvious ones.

Emotional Violence In Relationships

Emotional abuse typically does not happen “out of the blue” in an immediately recogniseable way. Normally, it starts with a few small things. It’s like the perpetrator is “testing the water” to see how much they can get away with.

They may make affection conditional on you doing what they want. Or they may start criticising you is subtle ways or making fun of the choices you make so that you end up second guessing yourself. 

The problem is in spotting this behaviour and labelling it as abusive because there is a little bit of this in every relationship. Many people criticise their partner gently and out of a sense of fun. It becomes abuse whenit causes you harm (for instance – low self esteem).

Recovery From Psychological Abuse

You can recover from psychological abuse. It may take 4 – 6 sessions depending on the severity of the problem. Here’s what you can expect during those sessions:
