Couples Therapy Ireland

Hi, my name is Paul Hunter. If you’ve googled “couples therapy” or “marriage counselling”, you’ve come to the right page.
I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist, CBT Practitioner and Life Coach. For the past fifteen years, I have been helping couples from all over Cork City and County to resolve their issues.
Typically I’ll see two types of couples in my office:
- the couples that mutually agree they have a problem and both want to be there to try and sort it out.
- couples where one person has insisted they come along for therapy, but the other doesn’t really want to be there.
I explain to everyone right at the beginning, that reviving a relationship requires some work and commitment from both partners. Our first task is to figure out if both of you want that.
Common problems in relationships are:
- You’ve both drifted apart and the spark is gone
- One person (or both) has been unfaithful
- Your communication style ends up in arguments

Do You Need Marriage Counselling / Couples Therapy?
If you can answer yes to any of the following, marriage counselling or couples therapy would be a good idea.
- Have you become "disinterested" in your partner?
- Is intimacy dead? (hand-holding, kissing, sex)
- Do you feel your partner lies or keeps secrets?
- A lot of conversations turning into arguments?
- Does your partner conceal their purchases?
- Do you suspect your partner has been unfaithful?

Does Couples Counselling Work?

In a study from 2012 published in The Journal Of Marital And Family Therapy, it is claimed that couples counselling has a positive effect on 70% of couples.
In my own clinic, my feedback roughly supports that figure. I firmly believe that therapy is about getting clarity first and foremost. You’ll find that I encourage couples to communicate with total honesty.
Over the years, I have found that the one thing that hinders therapy more than anything else is when one partner isn’t being fully honest about their feelings.
However, when both partners sit on my sofa with a determination to be totally open, it’s amazing what progress can be made in a very short time.

Couples Therapy Cork

When people think of marriage counselling or couples therapy, it is normal to think of someone who gives advice in a kindly fashion. I believe there is a more direct and more successful approach. My style is all about finding solutions by:
- establishing if both parties want to work to revive the relationship
- identifying the issues
- allocating homework to each partner every week
- checking on progress and calling out lack of effort
