Hi, my name is Paul Hunter. I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist, CBT Practitioner and Life Coach and I specialise in helping people with anxiety.

One of the most common questions I get asked is “what is anxiety?”. Your body’s natural reaction to stress is to create anxious feelings. It is a sensation of dread or trepidation about what is ahead.

For instance, some people may be anxious before going to a job interview or giving a speech on the first day of class.

However, if your symptoms are severe, last for at least six months, and affecting your life, you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder.

Depending on the problem, you may need some form of medication (from your doctor). You will also need some form of talking therapy.

The two types of therapy I always recommend for this problem are hypnotherapy and CBT. The combination of both have very rapid results in most cases.

What Causes Anxiety?

I’ve listed below, some of the conditions / life events, that can, possibly, be the root cause of your problem.

  •  Traumatic Life Experiences: examples might be witnessing an accident or an act of violence, a parent or relation dying when you are at an early age, etc.
  • Childhood Abuse: Being abused, either sexually, emotionally or physically, or being a victim of neglect
  • Shyness: if you were extremely shy as a child, you are at higher risk of being socially anxious as an adult.
  • Excessive Alcohol Intake: alcohol negatively affects your serotonin levels.
  • Drugs: eg. many weed users suffer from paranoia after years of smoking a number of joints every day.

  1. The first step in treating anxiety is always to seek medical advice. This will help rule out possible medical causes (eg. Vit. B12 deficiency).
  2. The next step is to identify the right treatment. Hypnotherapy and CBT are normally the gold standard in treating anxiety-related problems.
