What Is Agoraphobia?

If you ask most people, they will probably say “a fear of open spaces”. However, while that may be true of some sufferers, it’s not entirely accurate.

Agoraphobia is an extreme anxiety about:

  • Situations or places you know little about
  • Crowded spaces (eg. a busy shopping centre)
  • Public transportation (ie. buses, trains, planes)
  • Being away from home and by yourself

In order to create a phobia, the imagination has to be working really well. A fear or phobia comes from your mind convincing you of something that’s essentially untrue.

So, it’s the exact same process that’s used (in hypnosis), to convince you that those situations that previously used to trigger anxiety or panic, now trigger off feelings of safety.

In essence, the very fact you have a fear or phobia is proof that you can overcome it.
